Le Lierre (Ivy), 1901 by Alphonse Mucha
A marvelous palette of soft greens, dusty lilac and mahogany brown. I love the graceful swags of ivy looped through her hair. Like its companion piece Le Laurier (Laurel), the wonderful trompe-l'oeil effect gives this work an earthy, garden feel and a tactile appeal.
You want to actually reach out and feel the texture of the tile mosaics. The Arts and Crafts Movement influence is stronger and the palette more restrained in these two pieces than in most of Mucha's other works, yet that lyrical Mucha magic is as potent as ever.
Matching note cards, postcards, return address labels, stickers and more are available in my gallery's Art Nouveau Collection.
