Alphonse Mucha La Plume Art Nouveau Gift Jewelry Box

La Plume (The Pen, sometimes called The Quill) by Alphonse Mucha, 1899

To view at high resolution in store or buy, please click the link below:

La Plume (The Pen, sometimes called The Quill) by Alphonse Mucha, 1899 One of two decorative panels from the set Plume et Primevere. This work is lesser known but is among the most highly praised by art critics. "These two symbolic figures, complete with Mucha's customary aureoles around their heads and adorned with filigrees in their hair, comprise one of the best decorative panel sets marketed by Champenois" (Rennert/Weill p. 240).

The lady holds a feather quill and laurel branches before her, a faint smile playing on her face. Her fabulous jewelry and headpiece suggests a theatrical performance of the day, and her blond hair is swept up. The mosaic medallion behind her lends a marvelous tactile sense. In the upper corners you can glimpse blue roses. Colors include chocolate brown, French blue, golden yellow, soft sage greens, blue green, cinnabar red, white and rosy beige.

A truly elegant gift box, treasure box, cache box, trinket box or jewelry box. A perfect for a writer, reader or anyone who loves books and literature.

Alphonse Mucha Laurel Art Nouveau Gift Trinket Box Keepsake Box

Le Laurier (Laurel), 1901 by Alphonse Mucha.

Le Laurier (Laurel), 1901 by Alphonse Mucha.

Like its companion piece Le Lierre (Ivy), the wonderful trompe l'oeil effect gives this piece an earthy, garden feel and a tactile appeal. You want to actually reach out and feel the texture of the tile mosaics. The Arts and Crafts Movement influence is stronger and the palette more restrained in these two pieces than in his other works, yet that lyrical Mucha magic is as potent as ever.

This would be smashing in a solarium or sun porch or garden-themed room -- or any room, that matter. I love the the marvelous greens, against the rich browns, accented with dusty lilac and goldenrod.

Whether you use it as a gift box, treasure box, cache box or jewelry box, this is one smashing piece of art.

From the poster for the fairy tale ballet and pantomime production Princezna Hyacinta by Ladislav Novák and Oskar Nedbal presented in Prague during the 1911 season.
